Motivation
Do you know of something you could do that would improve your life and yet you don't do it? We all have it within ourselves to achieve more. To do more. To be more. Whether that may be in your career, relationships, finances, or health & fitness. Right now, you probably are not fulfilling your full potential. In fact, following over 100 years of psychological studies by some of the world's greatest minds, many psychologists have concluded that only 1% of the human race fulfill 100% of their potential.

So, why is that? It all boils down to one thing - motivation. We don't always do what we know will make our lives better because we can't get motivated enough to do it, or we can't stay motivated enough to see it through to the end. Lack of motivation is the biggest barrier to achieving more in your life and fulfilling your full potential. Just think how much better your overall quality of life would be, if you could only find the right level of motivation to complete the things you need to do to improve your performance. Check out the video above to see footage of one the most motivated people I've ever come across, who also happens to be one the best players in the history of American Football.

The origin of the term “motivation” is found in the Latin word “movere” which literally means “to move.” This quite aptly describes the inner force in all of us that stimulates our interest, arouses our desire, sharpens our focus and drives us to direct our actions in a particular way. Motivation is an essential component of performance, as we regard successful people as being highly motivated. More than that, motivation is fundamental to driving every human function. Without motivation, we would not achieve even the most basic of tasks.

Motivation is linked to minimizing pain and maximizing pleasure. Herein lies the problem. We are generally motivated to achieve short-term gains and achievements, which often has a negative impact on our long-term achievements. A million temporary successes could result in an overall poor level of achievement in life. For example, finding food and eating when we are hungry is a temporary success. We are motivated to eat by our hunger pains to minimize this pain. If there is a choice of food available, we will generally choose the food that we

enjoy the taste of the most to maximize our pleasure. In the short term, we are scoring high in our result in relation to our motivation. However, always choosing our foods on the basis of taste and pleasure ahead of what’s best for us, could result in an imbalance of eating high calorie, low nutrition, fatty foods such as fried foods, chocolate and sweets, instead of foods that are nutritious, essential, efficient fuel for our bodies such as fruit, vegetables and lean meat. The short-term effect is we feel happy and satisfied for a few hours. The long-term effect would be an increase in weight and a decrease in our health and physical appearance.
We need to overcome our basic, primal instincts and think intelligently. We need to stoke the fires of our motivation towards longer-term goals in order to achieve more in life. Is your motivation focused on short-term gains at the expense of long-term gains? If so, although you may feel good about some of your choices right now, there will come a time soon and for the rest of your life that you may regret those choices and wished you had lifted your head higher to look towards your future, instead of burying your head into the short life pleasures of the moment. Motivation is a powerful force; so make sure it is focused on the right things to improve your overall quality of life and level of achievements.
